Thoughts:
This costume is one of my favourites as it was a lot of fun to wear. This was also the first time I'd made two props to a standard I was satisfied with. The umbrella was probably the most difficult part of the costume to make but it was worth it, and it's functional!
It was important to me that I got this costume as accurate as possible, I realised make-up can really make a difference to a costume. I acquired some false eyelashes and cut them into shape for an authentic look and which really helped me eyes "pop out"
Although, If I could remake anything, it would be the boot covers. At that point I was a bit stuck for time, but if time wasn't an issue, I would have covered the whole shoe with red PVC.
Perona
(One Piece)
Reason for making this costume:
At the time I was watching an anime called "One Piece". Perona has a distinctive look out of the other characters and I loved the colour scheme of her outfit. This was also a great opportunity to make more props, as this outfit consists of 2.
How I made the costume:
The Crown -
I drew up some paper patterns and transferred them to coloured craft foam. Gold studs were used for the gold detailing, that were threaded through the foam. Everything was attached together using super glue as it was the best method. The black cross is detachable, and is made from two pieces of craft foam glued together, with wire in-between to reinforce it. A small block of styrofoam was attached at the bottom, which helped secure it to the top of the crown. The finished piece was then superglued to a clear headband.
Hair Clips -
The hair clips were made from craft foam, with a small thin piece attached to the bottom, so they could be threaded through the wig like a pin.
Umbrella -
For this I bought a small child's umbrella. I removed the material from the umbrella and made paper patterns out of the pieces. These were then reused to cut out new pieces in red and purple polycotton. These were then sewn together, the square pieces were made from interfacing and red polycotton along with the horns on top of the umbrella. The eyes for the umbrella were appliquéd on, and are made out of white and black PVC.
Crop Top -
The crop top was made out of stretchy white cotton, which a pattern was taken from an existing top. The red semi-circle borders were first a pattern, then transferred to red fleece and hand cut and stitched to the collar. The details on the cuffs were made using red fleece and hand cut.
The design on the front of the top was drawn on the back of black adhesive felt, peeled and stuck onto the top.
Skirt -
Using a pattern I took from an existing skirt, I modified the pattern to accompany the semicircle flaps at the bottom, which I measured and then applied to the pattern. The pattern was in two pieces, which was transferred to red polycotton and sewn together at either side. The skirt could be slipped over my head, so a fastening wasn't required. The belt is made from gold cotton, interfacing and red poly cotton with gold studs added for the detail. This belt was then appliquéd on the top of the skirt. The white details were cut out from white adhesive felt. The details on the hem are made from red fleece hand cut and stitched to the edge.
Cape -
I drafted a paper pattern for the cape and then transferred it to red fleece material. I transferred the red semi-circle edging I had made earlier to the collar of the cape. The white edging is made from white faux fur folded over and appliquéd on top. The bow is made from pink satin material stuffed with polyester stuffing. The bow is attached to one part of a hook and eye clip, the other part of the clip was sewn to the other side of the cape. This was for easy removal and kept the look I wanted, as the cape tends to flare at the bottom.
Boot Covers -
The covers are made from red PVC material with scalloped edging on the bottom to make it easier to sit over the top of the shoes. The top of the boot covers were folded over and sewn for a neater finish, the small strap details on the side were made from interfacing and covered with red PVC and gold cotton. The covers were made to fit my calves perfectly, so there was no need to include a fastening for them.
