Thoughts:
This costume was a quite the learning experience, and one of the more complicated costumes i've made so far. This costume was quite uncomfortable to wear, as it was hard to sit down without squatting. Although I enjoyed being "Fran" for the day, this isn't a costume I would likely wear again to an event, due to the discomfort.
Fran
(Final Fantasy XII)
Reason for making this costume:
At the time of making this costume I was playing a Video game called "Final Fantasy XII". My favourite character in the game was Fran, as I loved her look and whole demenour. This would also be a great opportunity to make armour for the first time.
How I made the costume:
The Helmet & Ears -
For the helmet I drew one half of a pattern and duplicated it, these were then transferred to black craft foam. Using the existing patterns I filled in the details, and cut them out to make a stencil. The stencil was used to make separate foam pieces to be glued on top of the existing craft foam to create the 3D effect. Black 3D foam paint was used to add dimension to the foam details, once dried the two halves were glued together. A hairdryer was used to soften the foam to make it easier to shape. The helmet was then primed with white gesso paint and then spray painted black.
A pattern was made for the ears, transferred to white card, white wadding, peach coloured felt and white faux fur. The white card was the base, which I stuck white wadding to the back to give the ears a fuller look and the peach coloured felt stuck to the front. Wire was then added to the border of the card for support, two pieces of white faux fur were then cut and the edges folded inwards to cover the rest of the ear. The black tips of the ears were created by using black sharpie pens. The ears were sewn to the wig (as a headband wasn't suitable), the helmet threaded through, and a small piece of velcro was added in between the ears to hold them together.
The Leotard -
The main material used for the leotard was black stretchy cotton. I took a pattern from a leotard I had and modified it, by cutting out the part that covers the stomach and removing the whole shoulder area. Reusing the pattern I took for the shoulder, I modified it and cut out the new piece from black latex. The red trim on the sleeves is red adhesive felt, and the piece is attached at the front with a metal clip. To mimic chainmail I used black netting appliquéd over the black cotton. I also placed snap clips at the bottom of the leotard for easy removal. Both the shoulder part and main body were stitched together just underneath the arms, and see through satin was appliquéd to the stomach area. The armour that goes over the bodice was constructed the same way as the helmet. To attach the armour to the bodice I used black velcro. This was to allow for easy removal.
The Thigh/Arm Armour -
Paper patterns were made first, as these were for my thighs and calfs this was the most difficult pattern to make, as it had to conform to the shape of my legs. The completed patterns were transferred to craft foam and gone over with 3D foam paint. Everything was then primed with gesso and then spray painted. To attach the armour to my legs I used black velcro at the back, for the thigh armour I attached double sided body tape underneath to hold them in place.
The Shoes -
Using some existing shoes I had, I made some paper patterns and transferred them to craft foam. I used super glue to attach the foam pieces to the shoes, then primed and spray painted them. The shield on the front of the left foot is attached via velcro.
The Bow/Arrows -
The bow is made from a light piece of wood obtained at my local DIY store, carved at the edges to allow the hoops of the string to be attached. Brown imitation leather was used for the grip and secured at the ends with craft foam painted white. Craft foam was used for the details at the bottom.
The arrows were wooden sticks with craft foam used for the arrow head and feathers (for H&S reasons). The craft foam was cut into at the end to immitate the look of feathers.
