Thoughts:

This costume is one of my favourites, as it's so light and fun to wear. It's also a costume where I spent time making the inside look just as good as the outside. I wanted to achieve a professional look and feel with this costume.

Although I don't have much experience with wig styling, this was a great opportunity to practice.

Star Butterfly
( Star vs the forces of Evil )

Reason for making this costume:

I really enjoyed the "Star vs The forces of Evil" show, and continuing my trend of making more straightforward, comfortable costumes, this was my next choice.

How I made the costume:

The Dress -

I first made a few paper patterns and mock ups using scrap material before settling on the right pattern. I cut out the pieces in both light green satin and polyester, as I was making the lining for the dress at the same time. All pieces were then stitched together, with the dress lining added to each piece one at a time. The motif on the front is made from pink minky fabric, with the details embroidered on with a sewing machine. The completed motif was then appliquéd to the front of the dress. An invisible zip was added to the back center seam.

The collar was made from white poly cotton with interfacing in the middle. This was attached to the top of the dress last, as it went between the dress and lining. Cotton lace was added to the sleeves and bottom of the dress to finish the look,

The Shoes -

Using some platform shoes I already owned, I made a cover to go over the whole shoes. A paper pattern was made first, before being transferred to interfacing and suede. The cover was glue just above the white soles of the shoes and the excess removed. A white strip of stick on felt was used to neaten the area, with black stick on felt used to make the "teeth" along the sole. The eyes were made from white and black stick on felt and stuck to the sides. The horns were pre-bought and hot glued to the front. A zipper was added to the back for easy removal.

The Leggings-

These were hard to find ready made, so I made my own stripy pattern in Paint Tool Sai, and sent it off to be printed onto custom leggings.

The Accessories -

The headband was an old headband modified. A piece of paper was added on top to add width to the existing band, pink PVC was then placed over the top and an additional stripe used to tidy the ends on the inside. The horns were pre-bought and suck on using hot glue.

The bag is made from yellow cotton, with the details embroidered using a sewing machine. The strap is black string, with the inside stuffed with polyester wadding to give it a "full" look. Originally the bag was to be functional, however it would be too small to accommodate anything.

The Wig -

The wig was cut and styled by backcombing the layers underneath to create volume. Afterwards the top layers were smoothed out and hairspray in place.

The Wand -

Two pieces of spare styrofoam were glued together and carved to make half a circle. Additional pieces were cut out from worbla and attached to the pvc pipe and main piece. Once all pieces were in place, it was completely covered in one sheet of worbla. The wings were made from scrape plastazote covered with worbla, then attached to the sides.

The wand was primed with white gesso, painted with acrylic paint and then finished with a layer of clear gloss.
