Thoughts:
I was satisfied with the outcome of this costume at the time. I expected some parts to fall off, but the precautions I put in place (teamed with being careful whilst wearing it), meant that no wardrobe malfunctions occurred whilst wearing it.
As my skilled progressed over the years, I decided to revisit this costume and remake it. Using better materials and processes to achieve a costume of high quality.
Dark Magician Girl
(Yu-Gi-Oh)
Reason for making this costume:
Yu-Gi-Oh was the second Anime I ever watched, and still remains one of my favourites. The trading card game was also a large part of my childhood, and Dark Magician Girl was one of my favourite cards. This was the second costume I made myself and due to the amount and choice of materials, this costume was one of my most expensive at the time.
How I made the costume:
Bodice -
The materials I chosen were mainly blue lycra and pink poly cotton. I took a bandeau top and made a pattern from it, which I then transferred to the blue lycra. To keep the bandeau in place, I sewed an elastic strap to the top.
Shoulder Piece -
I made a pattern for one side then duplicate it. I first cut out a piece in interfacing and then in blue lycra, this was all stitched together. The border is made from pink poly cotton sewn to the edges. The gem is made from half of a polystyrene ball, and painted with gold and green acrylic paint. The cape is made from pink poly cotton and machined gathered to achieve the "full" look, it was then sewn to the inside of the piece. I drew a paper pattern for the arrows, which was then transferred to the interfacing and blue lycra. Pink poly cotton was added for the border.
Skirt/Belt -
Paper patterns were created first. The belt ended up fitting over the top half of my body, therefore a fastening wasn't needed. The belt is made from interfacing with orange/yellow poly cotton covered over, the arrow pieces at were made in the same manner and sewn underneath the belt. The skirt is machine gathered, later pinned to the belt and sewn into place. I also pinned the two front edges of the skirt at an angle, to give it the "open curtain look" to be more cartoon accurate.
Gauntlets -
A paper pattern was created and then transferred to interfacing and blue lycra, with pink poly cotton used for the edges. The smaller Pink shape was appliquéd on top of the lycra, along with the blue circles on the top and bottom. They were all sewn together, with the seam on the inside so it was discreet. This was then finished off with heart button gems to the top and bottom of the gauntlets. As my arms/wrists were slim, a fastener wasn't needed.
Hat -
A pattern was made, then transferred to interfacing and blue lycra. Pink poly cotton was used for the borders and for the hoops at the top of the hat, this was achieved by folding over the pink cotton and appliquéing it to the lycra. The hat was made from two separate pieces, with the front part sewn to the back by the edges to give it the angled look. The pink swirl on the side is made from styrofoam, sanded down, then Papier-mâchéd and painted with pink acrylic paint. This was then attached with a needle and thread to the hat.
Necklace -
A paper pattern was drawn up and transferred to the interfacing and yellow satin material. The yellow satin was sewn to interfacing and velcro added to both ends as the fastening. A red gem was then hand sewn to the middle.
Boot Covers -
The boot covers were constructed from two pieces. A pattern was first taken from an old boot I was going to cover the material in. The excess of the cover is folded on the inside and stitched, whilst the bottom had elastic added round the edges so the material would stretch round the shoe. The top and ankle parts are separate and were made from interfacing covered in blue lycra and pink poly, these were a snug fit on the shoe so there was no need to attached these to the boots permanently. The yellow gems are two pieces of polystyrene balls cut in half, painted with acrylic and sewn.
